THE CHURCH ...

Times were hard for the local church,
which suffered from rash restoration
works and too much plastering. This
"mexican job" is indeed unfortunate…

Yet…, you'll soon be under its XIIth
century spell!

The original design of this Romanesque
building erected at the top of the village
allowed for one nave only. The aisle and
its three chapels were added by the
Charay's monks.

One of these chapels was founded by the
Chanaleilles' family, lords of the château
du Pin. According to the local legend,
some members of this family lie under
the church's paving.

In the choir, the ribbed vaults are
supported by crows with human heads.

The porch, forming a Romanesque arch,
is listed.

The whole church, consecrated to Saint
Pierre-aux-Liens, is an ideal place for
meditating - and singing (concerts are
occasionally organised here).

At sunset, the comb-shaped bell tower
takes on golden shades. With a bit of luck
(because it is quite rare nowadays), you
will hear its bell ring for the mass, as it has
been doing for almost 400 years.

Engraved in the bell's metal, a Latin
inscription is meant to preserve the village
from the fury of the elements: "De la
foudre et de la tempête délivrez-nous
Seigneur. Saint Pierre priez pour nous
".
